What is the Heavy Horse Show?

  • Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron and Shire horses — the gentle giants of the equine world — presented in the Nutrien Western Event Centre and Northern Lights Arena.
  • Members of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) perform while the horses compete for top honours at the show.
  • There are two classes
    • Halter class – the handler walks their horse into the ring to be judged on appearance, conformation and movement.
    • Cart Class (Driving, Hitching) – The competitor and their horse(s) pull a cart in a pattern around the arena. They are judged on everything: horses, harness, wagon, driver, performance and overall eye appeal. The majority of points are placed on the performance on the rail.
